Keep tamariki busy with a library card

Looking for budget-friendly ways to bond with your kids, keep them engaged and help them discover new passions? That little rectangle in your wallet – yes, the library card – is the key.

The library has everything your kids need to unwind, explore their interests and create lasting memories. Here’s how you can transform those "I'm bored" groans into "Wow, this is cool!" moments!

Get creative at the library's Makerspace

Many Auckland Council libraries have amazing Makerspace areas, where kids can get creative with 3D printers, sewing machines, and all sorts of techy tools. Imagine your child designing their own app or whipping up a funky tote bag!

Various tech is available at different libraries, and some pre-booking is required while others allow walk-in use.

Free fun at library events

We’re busy keeping kids busy! Libraries are constantly buzzing with fun activities, especially during school holidays. Some libraries even offer after school activities like learning to play the ukulele!

Each library hosts a multitude of unique events as part of our school holiday programme, so there really is something for everyone.

Why not try:

  • Group games
  • LEGO play sessions
  • Crafts like bookbinding, macrame or poi-making
  • Interactive STEM workshops from robotics to the cosmos
  • Story time and book readings by authors
  • Family movie nights
  • Karate and self-defence skills sessions
  • Talks for curious kids on topics from animal care to cloud science!

These activities and much more are available across the region. Search events by library location to find out what’s going on near you.

Explore the world through stories

Libraries are brimming with kids’ fiction books that transport your child to different worlds and teach them about all sorts of people. As children, we absorb much of our understanding of the world through stories. By meeting diverse characters we can gain new perspectives, deepen our empathy for others and even learn valuable self-reflection skills.

Encourage your tamariki to explore folktales from faraway lands where they'll discover a kaleidoscope of cultures and customs. Or, dive into historical fiction where the past comes alive – kids can connect with people from different eras and gain a deeper understanding of how the world has evolved.

Skills and activity books for growing brains

Fiction often takes centre stage, but don't underestimate the power of non-fiction! Does your junior chef dream of conquering the kitchen? Borrow a cookbook and whip up some yummy treats together. Maybe they're a budding Van Gogh? Craft books are their new best friend.

From nurturing a thriving garden to mastering essential outdoor skills, the library’s non-fiction shelves hold resources to ignite any passion. Explore skills and activity books for kids to find their new favourite thing!

Kids’ e-Audiobooks on the go

Audiobooks are now widely available online through your library card. Road trips just got a whole lot more exciting, plus you can keep the kids happy when tagging along on errands. Even dentist appointments won't feel quite so scary for tamariki with a good story playing in their ears.

Pick from a huge range of e-Audiobooks for kids and teens

Bring stories to life with VOX books

What are VOX books? Think physical books with a built-in storyteller. With an audio-reader gadget attached, kids can now experience an interactive read-along version of picture books and chapter books.

Great for engaging readers who struggle to stay focused or those who are just starting their reading journey. Discover over 400 titles available as VOX books in the library catalogue

Online homework help

Nothing is quite as humbling as not knowing the answers to your child’s homework questions. Luckily for them (and you!), your library card gets you free access to online homework help websites – a lifesaver when you're both stumped by long division.

Your child can also ask librarians for homework help in a safe and friendly online chat. Any Questions is available from 1pm-6pm on weekdays for NZ students in Year 1 to 13.
