A student's guide to Auckland Council Libraries
Work smarter, not harder. The best study environments are free and have everything you need to focus, collaborate, unwind and get support from experts. Here’s how you can get free resources and support from libraries as a student in Auckland.
Get a library card
Getting started is easy. You can unlock a world of free resources with just the click of a button or by wandering down to your local branch. Joining the library is completely free for Tāmaki Makaurau residents and ratepayers. Join online in minutes and receive your unique number to gain immediate access to our extensive eBook collection, online learning modules, research databases and other digital resources – perfect for on-the-go learning.
Or, find your local library and swing by to pick up your card, which grants you access to physical collections, books and in-person services. Simply bring photo ID to the front desk and you'll be ready to dive into our physical and online collections in no time.
Haven't visited the library recently?
New to visiting the library? Don’t worry – just come as you are. While libraries might conjure images of hushed spaces and strict rules, fret not! Stern shushes are a thing of the past, and occasional late returns are handled with grace, not hefty fines. The focus is on shared respect – for others enjoying the space and for the resources offered. Explore at your own pace and feel free to bring along a quiet snack (think cold and non-smelly!) and a drink to enjoy in designated areas. Libraries understand the need for quick energy boosts during study sessions!
Whether you're a social butterfly or an introvert, your library experience is tailored to you. Our friendly librarians are always happy to guide you in person with resource recommendations or research assistance. However, if you prefer a discreet and independent experience, our self-checkout system allows you to borrow materials without needing to interact with anyone.

Access special technologies
Did you know Auckland Council Libraries offer Makerspaces at various locations, brimming with technology and resources to bring your creative visions to life?
