Descended from Rangatira exhibition
Māori and Pasifika people have a long tradition of powerful leadership, with mana passing down from generation to generation since before recorded history.
Every day during We Read Auckland, the ‘Descended from Rangatira’ exhibition will be sharing stories of Polynesian identity and culture to help rangatahi from different backgrounds become the rangatira they were born to be.

Special Collections Reading Room, Level 2, Central City LibraryThe Special Collections section at Auckland Central City Library is exactly what it sounds like – a diverse set of our most fascinating, unique and valuable collections.
We’re inviting you to come in and take a closer look at our precious taonga.
From rare, centuries-old illustrations of fairy tales to explorations of Victorian art to sound and oral history recordings, our librarians and preservationists will be on hand to guide you through Auckland Council Libraries’ special collections.

Read to a dog
Tuesday 16 August, 10.30am-11.30am. Albany Village Library
One of the most anticipated events of We Read Auckland 2022, Read to a Dog combines two awesome things – reading and dogs.
This is a wonderful opportunity to teach tamariki about dog behaviour and how to approach dogs. Dogs from the Auckland Council Animal Shelters will also lend their ears and listen attentively while your tamariki read them a story.

Samesame But Different Pride Poetry Speakeasy
Tuesday 16 August 2022, 6pm-8pm. Studio One Toi Tū
Join us for a celebration of queer poetry at Studio One Toi Tū.
The PRIDE Poetry Speakeasy is hosted by Michael Giacon and features author essa may ranapiri – pictured above alongside their book Echidna – as a guest reader.
Webinar: It takes a village: How reading and storytelling sets your whānau up for success
Wednesday 17 August, 11am – 12noon. Online via Zoom
Talking, reading and singing with your tamariki leads to successful lifelong outcomes for the whole whānau.
Bringing together community-based professionals Jilly Tyler of Talking Matters NZ, Linda Vagana of Duffy Books in Homes and Lawren Matrix of Auckland Council Libraries, this online panel event will discuss the benefits of reading, talking and singing together, how these impact our children’s development, and will provide practical tips and ideas for parents and caregivers.

Reading Revolution
Wednesday 17 August 2022, 1pm-2pm. Botany Library
Join us at Botany Library for a new type of reading group where we listen to short stories and poems be read aloud.
Reading aloud and sharing our thoughts brings the words to life and allows a richer interpretation of the texts than we would otherwise get by reading alone and in our heads.
Conversations with Auckland authors: Vā – Stories by Women of the Moana
Thursday 18 August, 7pm-8.30pm. Te Atatū Peninsula Library and online via Zoom.
Thirty-eight wāhine toa came together to publish ‘Vā: Stories by Women of the Moana’. This is an anthology of stunning stories that defy colonial boundaries and draw on ancient myths.
Editor Sisilia Eteuati and a panel of authors representing the contributors will discuss this fascinating text.
This is an opportunity to learn about how the book was created and the context of the stories it contains. There will be a chance to ask questions at the end of the session.

After Dark: A guided night walk with author Annette Lees
Friday 19 August, 7pm-8.30pm. Arataki Visitor Centre
In her book, ‘After dark: Walking into the nights of Aotearoa’, Annette Lees explored the stories of our country that have been obscured by darkness and time, from moonlit surfing trips to war stealth to night navigation on waka.
Annette is inviting us to go on an after-dark expedition of our own. Join her at the Arataki Visitor Centre on Friday 19 August at 7pm for a guided night-time ramble through the Waitākere Ranges.
Drag Story Times
Friday 19 August – Saturday 27 August. Various West Auckland libraries
Hosted by your local children’s librarian and a fabulous special guest, we’ll be hosting Drag Story Times at libraries in West Auckland from Rānui to Blockhouse Bay!
Bring the whānau along and get ready for rainbow rhymes and stories!

Born in Shanghai, raised in Auckland and based in New York, Chloe Gong is one of Tāmaki Makaurau’s hottest talents who is smashing bestseller lists!
Chloe will be joining us for a discussion about her ‘These Violent Delights’ duology and her forthcoming spy series, ‘Foul Lady Fortune’.
