Talanoa with Angelina Taungahihifo

Mālō e lelei! Tell us a little about yourself, Angelina!

Mālō e lelei, my name is Angelina Taungahihifo. I work as the Senior Library Assistant for Pasifika based at New Lynn War Memorial Library. My role focuses on engaging with customers from the local Pacific community, helping to increase participation and use of the library, and designing innovative programs that meet the community's needs.

I am 30 years of age, currently live in West Auckland with my parents and currently working towards completing my Bachelor of Arts Degree double major in Communication, Information & Library Studies with Open Polytechnic in Wellington.

How do you celebrate 'Uike Katonga'i 'oe Lea Faka-Tonga?

I celebrate this special week with my family and my loved ones. We get together over a beautiful meal, share stories, watch cultural performances on Youtube, catch up with the latest news in Tonga, overall have a good time.

How do you connect with friends and family during this time?

I use Facebook Messenger mostly to connect with my friends and family since it's easy and straightforward to use.

Can you tell us about some of your favourite aspects of the Tongan language?

The Four Core Values or Fa'i kavei koula.

  • 'Ofa - Love
  • Faka'apa'apa - Respect
  • Anga Fakato ki lalo/Lototoo - Humility
  • Tauhi Va - Gratitude

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I would love for Tongan people in New Zealand to continue enriching the culture and language because it is an important part of our upbringing.

Mālō ‘aupito Angelina!
