Hot drinks, knitwear and cosying up with a good book – we all have our tried and tested ways of surviving the winter weather in Tāmaki Makaurau. Whether you head out to brave the cold or like to stay tucked up at home, our inviting and cosy spaces, binge-worthy collections, and portable Home Energy Audit Toolkits are here to help keep you and your whānau safe, entertained and warm this winter.

Make our libraries your lounge

If you want to escape the harsh winter weather, pop into your local library to kick back and relax! Browse the shelves, charge your phone, connect to the free WiFi, listen to a Book Bite or find a comfy couch and hunker down for an hour or two. 

Rānui and Devonport Library even have their own fireplaces, so make yourself at home!

Free WiFi

A friendly reminder ​that all of our libraries across Tāmaki Makaurau offer free wireless internet access (WiFi), including mobile libraries. Bring in your laptop, tablet or smartphone to access the internet. If you don’t have your own device, you can use our public computers.

Libraries as your office

Head to your local library to make the most of your working day and give yourself a change of scene. Whether you work from home or don’t have an established office space, we have free WiFi, bookable meeting rooms, printing services, dedicated office seating and couches available for any type of worker.

Events

While you’re in the library, why not check out our broad range of regular events that take place throughout the week. From book clubs and coffee catch-ups to Kōrero Māori groups and craft workshops, there’s something for every Aucklander to enjoy this winter!

HEAT kits

Although Auckland Libraries provide safe and warm locations, it’s important to make sure your own whare is too. 

Our free Home Energy Audit Toolkit (HEAT kits) contains practical tools and tips to help make your home healthier, warmer and environmentally friendly while saving money for your whānau. 

Search ‘Heat kit’ in the library catalogue to request a kit to take home for two weeks. 

Beamafilm at home

Stay indoors, wrap up warm and prepare to binge-watch hundreds of high-definition documentaries, independent features and foreign films on Beamafilm. This streaming service is completely free with your library membership! Find out how to sign up on our website.

Friendly faces

Grey skies and cold weather in winter can make some feel a bit blue, so if you want a pick-me-up, some company or want to get out of the house, head to your local library and chat to our friendly staff! 

You can ask any of our librarians for a reading recommendation, kōrero with our Māori or Pasifika specialists, join a community group or club, or just come in to say hello!
