Read longer with auto-renewal

Young woman reading book on chair at home.

Finish your stack of books with the help of our new auto-renewal function! Kick back, keep reading and we'll take care of things for you!

From 30 July 2020, we'll automatically renew most unreturned items on your library account for another 28 days. Read on for what you need to know about this new feature.

What you need to know about auto-renewal

  • Your first renewal will now happen automatically unless the item has been requested by another customer.
  • Auto-renewals apply from the due date of the item - ensuring you have another full 28-day loan.
  • Most library items can be renewed twice unless requested by another customer.
  • You must manually renew your item before the due date if you would like to renew it a second time without accruing overdue charges. If the item has been requested by another customer, you will not be able to renew the item.
  • You can renew your own items in your library account online, in the Auckland Libraries app, or with the assistance of our librarians.
  • Some library items cannot be renewed, including items requested by another customer, Blu-Rays, DVDs, magazines, console games and CDs.
  • eBooks and eAudiobooks will not be auto-renewed - check your reading app for options to extend available eBook and eAudiobook loans or re-request eBooks or eAudiobooks.
You can also expect to see new look courtesy emails featuring clear, easy-to-read formatting and more details on each item you have checked out (useful when checking under the bed for lost books!).

Be sure to check your due dates on each item in your courtesy email to see which items have been auto-renewed and which ones you need to return to one of our 55 libraries.

  2. I'm not greatly into lateness myself but my husband was thrilled to hear about your new returns policy. He also commented that it would take pressure off your storage demands! Very pragmatic.

  9. Great Idea!! Confusing Email header however - Change heading to "your loan has been auto renewed till "date".
Much clearer and main intent of email immediately obvious.

    1. I don't agree. I think the current wording in the subject line makes sense. A heading with "your loan ..." is more confusing. Also, you may have books with different due dates.

  10. Understanding titles of non-English books on the online searching is too difficult to choose, meaning needs to go to libraries physically to read original titles. If automatically renewed then away longer from the shelves, more difficult to have a chance to find books.
So non-English books should not renewed automatically but just by the request. Thanks

  15. Thanks and very generous, although I do like to return books and not have them lying around the house when others could be reading them.

  16. Good initiative, but it would help if the title of the subject could say auto renewed..
or if the column in the email say Auto renewed till. Can be confusing at times.

  18. Excellent service thank you for the automatic renewal. I personally would like non-English books ALSO to be included in your automatic renewal as you have currently, and not to omit these in future. I read in 6 different languages, so a continuing on-line service would be great. Thank you!

  19. Thank you for the excellent service of the automatic renewals. I personally like the fact that all books, including non-English books are included in the automatic renewals - it's easy enough to read and understand on-line. I read in 6 different languages - so grateful to have the opportunity.

  21. I think its not helpful to send a "due date reminder" for things that have been automatically renewed. It's confusing at first, and even after you understand the details, it is still annoying to get a due date reminder for next month! I missed one because once they are done auto, you never send another REAL reminder 3 days before due. This is really stupid in my opinion. Meantime I just have to work with it. Ngaire (not Daniel)
