Kia ora koutou,

I am really pleased to advise that the Leys Institute Little Library will open at 9am on Tuesday 31 March and will be open the same hours as you are accustomed to at Leys Institute Library (Monday to Friday - 9am - 6pm, Saturday - 9am - 4pm, Sunday - Closed).

This brief update is to share some information about the interim library service for the Leys Institute Library customers. I know there is wide community interest so please feel free to share this with friends and family.

Please note that a range of people and departments at Auckland Council are currently working to present possible future options regarding the Leys Institute Library and Gymnasium for the Waitematā Local Board to consider, as planned, on 9 June. I completely understand the community passion for this building however I have no new information to share at this stage regarding the future of the building.

In the last three months Council staff have been working hard to find the best possible temporary site and to go through the various and many steps to transform it into a community library space.

We are doing this in a way that acknowledges the important history of the Leys Institute Library, maximizes a smaller footprint and provides a quality experience for you and fellow library users.

While this space will be temporary, we don’t want it to ‘feel’ temporary. We are introducing touches of the ‘real’ Leys Institute Library and re-using quality equipment and fittings where appropriate.

Originally we had indicated a mid-March opening but the lead times on some important equipment (not helped by the Covid-19 virus’ effect on worldwide logistics) has hampered that. We recently decided to raise the lower level of the split level floor in order to improve accessibility and that has altered the timeline slightly.

The Leys Institute Little Library is situated at 14 Jervois Rd (the corner of Jervois and Redmond), about 150m from the Leys Institute. Mobility and paid parking is available in surrounding streets, as is parking for other businesses you might be visiting, but you can still access parking at the rear of the Leys Institute Library outside of the fenced-off zone.

At the Leys Institute Little Library you will be able to borrow from a constantly refreshed collection, pick up holds, use public computers and printing, access free WiFi, sit and enjoy a read and a whole lot more.

I will provide another update in the week prior to opening. Meanwhile, the Leys staff are really excited about welcoming you into this new community space!
